A Perspective on Modern EPR Techniques, or Why an NMR Spectroscopist Should Be Interested in EPR

Arguably, advances in NMR instrumentation have become largely incremental, and it is very difficult for an individual research group to compete with the major commercial manufacturers. In contrast, pulsed EPR (and DNP) instrumentation is still advancing rapidly, with major opportunities for innovation and performance gains, driven by applications in molecular biology, catalysis, battery research and quantum sensing.
In this talk I will first give a broad overview of the field with the aim of persuading you to take a fresh look at EPR, whether for instrument development or for modern applications that can often complement NMR. I will then focus on high-field EPR/DNP instrumentation and its common challenges and opportunities, with practical tips, and examples of recent work on HiPER, a state-of-the-art W-band kW pulsed spectrometer developed at St Andrews.
