One, two, three… many. What modern pulse EPR knows about nuclei

In recent years, understanding the role of nuclear environment in pulse electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy has been vigorously boosted. In particular, many advances were made in the investigation of nuclear-induced electron spin decoherence kinetics. In this talk, we review these mechanisms, illustrated by the electron’s interaction with small groups of nuclei. Also, we discuss phenomena emerging in large nuclear systems (e.g., solvents or macromolecules). We will see how formally forbidden (or weakly allowed) electron-nuclear transitions shape the EPR signal, and how EPR can use them to probe and study electron’s surroundings.
